Teaching Systems Thinking and Biomimicry to Civil Engineering Students

Systems thinking and biomimicry are sustainability concepts with clear relevance to civil engineering. The tested teaching modules described in this paper are designed to help civil engineering students understand these concepts. The teaching modules in this paper were designed to consider Bloom's taxonomy and a variety of learning styles, but this does not mean that these modules will accommodate the learning needs for all students. The modules were tested in a specific scenario on one population, and it cannot be assumed that all learning styles are present in this group of students. Further research could refine these modules and evaluate them for more broad applicability by cycling them through the plan-do-check-act process at other institutions and in a broad range of classes. Restricting these concepts to individual courses does not accurately portray the interdisciplinary potential of these concepts.
