Theorizing Power

This classic quote from Bertrand Russell is cited in the first sentence of the first chapter of Jonathan Hearn's Theorizing power, but could easily have been his own words as he guides us through one of the more essential themes of social inquiry. Power permeates everything in our social world, and it is not particularly productive, either scientifically or in practice, to attempt to escape or ignore it. We have to learn to live with it, forever. Jonathan Hearn is senior lecturer in Sociology and Deputy Head of the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh. Educated in the USA, with a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology at the City University of New York (CUNY), but working for most of his career in political sociology, Hearn builds upon a broad foundation as he sets about theorising power.
