The importance of amino acids in medicinal and biological chemistry has made these compounds a focal point for asymmetric syntheses. Chiral pool-, chiral auxiliary-, and chiral ligand-based methods have been developed for syntheses of a variety of enantioenriched α and β amino acids and their derivatives.
