Rearrangement Reactions of (Hydroxyphenyl)carbenes

The phenylcarbene isomerization system 1-5 (eq 1) leads to some of the most extensive rearrangements known to organic chemistry. However, other than for aryl, alkyl, and substituted alkyl groups, little is known of the effects of substituents on the rearrangements of arylcarbenes. The intramolecular behaviors of various (hydroxyphenyl)carbenes 6 at elevated temperatures in the gas phase are now reported.
