A Multidisciplinary Approach To A Better Understanding Of And Therapy For Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

The overall premise of this project is that COPD is a syndrome with considerable heterogeneity regarding the relative contributions of the mechanisms of airflow obstruction. Moreover, differing mechanisms underlying airflow obstruction will have different pathobiology, genetic determinants and responses to therapy and the grouping of all of these patients under the umbrella "COPD" therefore impedes future progress in research and therapy. The best progress will be made when groups of investigators from a variety of basic and clinical research disciplines work together to approach these issues.
