Supporting Safe Storage of Plutonium-Bearing Materials Through Science, Engineering, and Surveillance

Toward the end of April 2009, the JNMM was approached by Dr. Mac Lou-than, a senior consulting scientist emeritus at the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL), about the possibility of having an issue dedicated to articles describing the tremendous amount of work that has been accomplished addressing the safe storage of plutonium. He noted that this endeavor, although to be spear-headed by SRNL, would be a multi-laboratory effort. He opined that our audience as well as others in the United States and around the world might find this work interesting, and he suggested perhaps ten technical articles might adequately cover the topic.
