Ni catalysts supported on various mixed oxides of Al_2O_3 with rare earth oxide and transitional metal oxides were synthesized. The studies focused on the measurement of the autothermal reforming of methane to hydrogen over Ni catalysts supported on the mixed oxide Zr_xCe_(30-x)Al_(70)O_δ (x=5, 10, 15). The catalytic performance of Ni/Zr_(10)Ce_(20)Al_(70)O_δ was better than that of other catalysts. XRD results showed that the addition of Zr to Ni/Ce_(30)Al_(70)O_δ prevented the formation of NiAl_2O_4 and facilitated the dispersion of NiO. Effects of CuO addition to Zr_(10)Ce_(20)Al_(70)O_δ were also investigated. The activity of Ni catalyst supported on CuO-ZrO_2-CeO_2-Al_2O_3 was somewhat affected and the Ni/Cu_5Zr_(10)Ce_(20)Al_(65)O_δ showed the best catalytic performance with the highest CH_4 conversion, yield of H_2, selectivity for H_2 and H_2/CO production ratio in operation temperatures ranging from 650 to 750℃.
