An electronic nose u0001E-Noseu0002 has been studied as a means tonrealize artificial olfaction. Electronic nose “instruments” are currently rela-ntively large, since the signal manipulation and classification are still donenby a personal computer u0001PCu0002 or a laptop. For this reason, we have de-nveloped a portable electronic nose system based on a handheld ma-nchine by using a vapor detection array made of carbon-black polymerncomposites and a sensor circuit. In an effort to make a portable elec-ntronic nose, we used thin-film chemical sensors based on the carbon-nblack polymer nanocomposite to reliably detect chemical warfare agents.nTo replace the large volume of PCs, we used a field-programmable gatenarray to perform system control, signal manipulation, and classification.nThis E-Nose system was exposed to dimethyl-methyl phosphonatenu0001DMMPu0002 and dichloromethane u0001DCMu0002 in parts per million concentrationnlevels. DMMP and DCM were considered as simulants of the nervenagent sarin and the incapacitating agent BZ gases, respectively
