This first stage of tempering of an iron-carbon-nitrogen martensite (containing 1.7 at./100 C and 3.3 ./100 N) was stud- ied by atom probe analysis. Different stages of transforma- tion were obtained by subjecting various specimens to dif- ferent heat treatments. Analysis of the mass spectra revealed the presence of peaks not observed on decomposing binary FeC and FeN martensites: molecular ions occurred that con- Tained both carbon and nitrogen.
