The effect of screening programmes on the treatment of benign breast neoplasms: observations from current practice in Italy

Purpose: In the Lazio region, Italy, mammographic screening programmes were gradually activated from 1999 to 2003, providing an opportunity to compare two unselected populations in the same time period: women who were contacted in writing, and those who had not been contacted. In this study, we compare the incidences of treatments for benign and malignant neoplasms in the two groups.
