On 12 September 2004,the Decatur,Alabama Daily Mews reported that the owner of a local insulation factory fired a line worker because she had refused to remove a John Kerry Democratic presidential campaign sticker from the rear window of her Chevrolet Lumina as it stood in the parking lot.Owner Philip Geddis had previously distributed pro-Republican leaflets extolling the benefits of President George Bush's tax cuts in employees' pay envelopes,and he reportedly told the employee with the campaign sticker,Lynne Gobbell,that she either had to work for him or for John Kerry.Remarked Gobbell,It upset me and made me mad that he could put a letter in my check expressing his (political) opinion,but I can't put something on my car expressing mine'.
