摘要

Information systems (IS) in organizations often target economic value-increasing efficiency, improving service to build customer loyalty, optimizing the value chain-to create a sustainable competitive position and so, to improve the bottom line. In addition to economic value, however, IS create value along other dimensions: political value, social value, cognitive value, affective value, and physical value. Political value pertains to power and influence. In 2004, during Ukraine's Orange Revolution, hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets to protest an oppressive government using, among other things, the Internet, their cell phones, and a range of collaboration tools to stay informed and coordinate their efforts. The Internet became a sufficient threat for the government to try unsuccessfully to shut it down.
