ISSUES AND CHALLENGES PRESENTED BY DEFAMATION ON THE INTERNER

The information revolution created by the Internet has raised many issues regarding the tort of defamation. As an accessible, inexpensive, and efficient means of communicating, the Internet "promise[s] to be the supreme mechanism for perpetrating defamation." It has been observed that online defamation cases are clearly on the rise. Case law now indicates that there is little doubt that posting libellous statements to an Internet newsgroup or bulletin board, or a page of the World Wide Web, can give rise to liability in defamation.
