Franchise systems are everywhere. From quick ser-vice restaurants, to hotels, to car rentals (to name some of the most commonly known examples), this type of business model comprises a significant part of our economy. Franchise systems vary widely in size and scope. In some cases, franchised businesses are interconnected in sprawling systems, involving hundreds or thousands of separate businesses across the country or across many countries, all operating under the same brand name which is licensed to the franchised businesses from one franchisor. In other cases, franchised businesses are part of small, start-up franchise systems, involving just a handful of locations of a new brand that a franchisor has created.
