NERVI AND CANDELA: A DIALOGUE BETWEEN ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE

This paper presents a biography of these two geniuses of engineering and architecture, underscoring important aspects of their training in their respective professions and the context in which they worked. Within this, certain parallels have been drawn that may have contributed significantly to the ideas for their work, such as having participated actively in the First World War and the Spanish Civil War; or the between the two emblematic works in the sporting field: the stadium built for the Rome Olympic Games in 1960 and the Sports Arena (Palacio de los Deportes), built for the Mexico City Olympic Games in 1968.Within this dialectic drawing of parallels, there are references that describe aspects of their theories on structural logic, beauty and construction. Furthermore, the different methods of structural analysis, use of geometry in relation to structural behaviour and mastery of reinforced concrete within the construction processes of their works is described, together with the importance of economy, in the sense of money-saving, logic, reuse and, principally, as one of the fundamental elements of efficiency.
