The power sector, which acts as the backbone of an economy, is undergoing a significant change with sustained economic growth continuing to drive electricity demand in India. The government's focus on attaining 'power for all' has accelerated capacity addition in the country. The central government aims to achieve "One Nation One Grid One Price" through (ⅰ) the Ujjwal distribution assurance yojana (UDAY) enabling discoms to increase volume of power purchase, (ⅱ) planning sufficient renewable energy-generating capacity in all regions and (ⅲ) reducing coal imports by increasing coal output in the country. Under the UDAY scheme, so far 17 states/Union Territories have signed MoUs. Notably, these states have taken positive steps towards supporting their Discoms (power distribution companies) for further improving the financial and operational efficiency.
