Estimation and Analysis of Harmonics and Power Factor Correction in a Modern Steel Manufacturing Facility

Industrial automation has led to extensive use of nonlinear and electronically switched loads leading to increased voltage and current harmonic distortions. The consequence of harmonic distortions includes malfunctioning and overheating of various equipments, transformer overheating and overloading, metre errors and power cable failures. In view of eliminating these problems, CONTUNE (continuously tuned) filter which is capable of adjusting automatically to the frequency of the generated harmonics has been proposed as a solution. The designed filter has been vindicated on an industrial plant, and the performances have been investigated by simulations made using Sim Power Systems tool box of MATLAB/Simulink V 2013. Results have been analysed in accordance with IEEE standard (519-1992) and realized that the CONTUNE filter improves the overall quality to a greater extent that a single CONTUNE filter would mitigate multiple harmonic frequencies.
