A welcome to the inaugural Publication, 1908

The launch of The Journal in 1908 was prefaced with a welcome from Sir John Gavey. A president of the IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers), he travelled the world attending conferences and exhibitions, such as the St Louis International Exhibition in the United States in 1905, where he reported that, in the telegraph group, the British exhibit was the most outstanding. (According to Gavey, the Americans were concentrating on telephony rather than telegraphic inventions; even their inventors acknowledged that Great Britain was much more ready to give new telegraphic ideas a fair trial.) Here we replicate his Welcome letter from the very first issue of The Journal, in April 1908.
