Mastering digital business: How powerful combinations of disruptive technologies are enabling the next wave of digital transformation

During the past three decades, information technology (IT) has become an integral component of all organizations. IT has fundamentally transformed nearly every aspect of businesses and has become the backbone of every company’s value chain. The powerful technologies of e-commerce, enterprise systems, supply chain integration, business process automation, and robotics have forever changed how the businesses operate. After all these decades of IT investments and upgrades, one would expect that the transformation of businesses has decelerated and IT investments have reached a steady state—but that is not to be. The latest round of extensive retail closings of nearly 2,000 stores in the United States during the first four months of 2017 and the steady displacement of humans by robots in the workplace strongly suggests that business transformation as a result of advances in IT is not yet complete and that many important changes are yet to come.
