The Impact of Team-level LMX on ISD Team Innovation: The Role of Team Cooperation and LMX Differentiation

Leadership within Information System Development (ISD) team is considered to be an important topic for both researchers and practitioners. However, very little research has been pursued to understand this issue from Leader-member Exchange (LMX) perspective. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of team-level LMX on ISD team innovation, and the mediating effect of team cooperation as well as the moderating effect of LMX differentiation between them. Based on a sample (n=245) from china, questionnaire surveys were carried out to explore the relations among variables. All analysis were conducted at the team level. As expected, the team-level LMX within was positively related to ISD team innovation, and the team cooperation was the mediator between team-level LMX and ISD team innovation. Furthermore, we found that team-level LMX interacted with relationship differentiation within ISD teams to explain team innovation. The results were discussed in terms of their implications for related theories and management practice.
