The writer wishes to thank the discussers for their comments. As they point out, the model developed and presented in the original paper is conceptually simple. It has few (two) parameters, and yet while the model was developed based on the conceptualization of a box culvert, it applies to a range of culvert inlet configurations quite well. Furthermore, unlike previous culvert rating curve models, the transition point between submerged and unsubmerged flow conditions is automatically specified and the resulting rating curve through this point is both continuous and smooth.rnThe discussers note that other models have long been available for predicting culvert hydraulic performance. The original paper discusses the FHwA models (Normann et al. 1985) and the added difficulty in calculating the transition between unsubmerged and submerged performance conditions. The discussers also present the FHwA fifth-degree polynomial equations that provide the performance curves with a smooth transition between unsubmerged and submerged hydraulic performance conditions.
