NAHRO 2005 LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE FOCUSES ON STANDING TOGETHER FOR STRONG COMMUNITIES

The 2005 NAHRO Legislative Conference kicked off on the bright, sunny morning of March 14, at the JW Marriott in Washington, D.C. More than 600 attendees were on hand for the opening session, during which NPR correspondent and political analyst Juan Williams delivered a rousing speech comprised of equal parts humor, political analysis and passionate social awareness. Williams began by identifying himself as a child of public and subsidized housing, noting that he was "thrilled to be here with those who supported my family." He then discussed the current political climate and its priorities, and issued an impassioned call to the audience to keep reminding their communities and their legislators about the truly important issues: "making sure that those who are hungry are fed, those who are naked are clothed, that those who have no shelter might find a place to live—those are values that resonate deeply in the American heart, even as we live through times in which people might claim that America has got to be about providing more opportunity for those who are already at the top of the social order."
