Although major cities are implementing innovative methods to battle homelessness and hunger, available resources are not able to keep up with the increased public demand and needs, according to a survey by the United States Conference of Mayors released in December 2011. The survey, which collected data from 29 cities from September 2010 through August 201 1, shows that as the nation faced its highest poverty rate in 52 years, 42 percent of the cities surveyed saw an increase in homelessness.
