Fairmont Educational Prosperity

In 2011, Griffin Housing Authority (GHA) was faced with a troubled community in its 80-unit Fairmont Housing Development. The public housing residents, tenants with absentee landlords and aging homeowners were surrounded by dilapidated housing. Lack of support for the community coupled with this property neglect fostered blight, crime, unemployment, teen pregnancy, obesity, school dropouts and poverty, as well as greater isolation from the larger community. To provide more support for the neighborhood, the GHA planned to acquire and renovate an existing building near the 80-unit Fairmont Housing Development in order to operate a community resource center. The purpose of the center was to provide services in education, family self-sufficiency, affordable housing and workforce development.
