The case for electronic health records (EHRs) has long been compelling: It can help recognize and contain epidemics, speed claims processing, and, of course, cut costs. The United States is spending $2.7 trillion annually on health care, a number that's approaching 18% of gross domestic product. The size of the problem is spurring a philosophical change, from a system where doctors are paid for the volumes of procedures they complete to one in which they are paid for keeping their patients healthy.
