This book comprises a detailed and well-researched account of the planning and corresponding political situations surrounding the development of heritage tourism in Port Royal, Jamaica. It involves the effective use of historical narratives to examine the plans drawn up to create a heritage tourism site in Port Royal, the difficulties in getting sufficient consensus actually to implement the plans, and the link between the development plans and the surrounding communities. The book illustrates very well the subjectivity involved in using historical narratives and the link between this subjectivity and the individual's social and cultural contexts as well as their motives. The book was written with three major objectives in mind. The first was to show why Port Royal is a compelling site for development planning by looking at the variable meanings, perspectives and interpretations of it by different social and economic constituencies.
