The U.S. Department of Transportation has been looking at cargo tank rollover crashes for many years. The research goes far beyond traction/stability control systems. It includes highway design, vehicle safety engineering and driver-related issues.rnA decade ago, the Office of Motor Carriers, then within the Federal Highway Administration, helped lead the development of the Intelligent Vehicle Initiative to begin testing the effectiveness of rollover stability devices. Beginning shortly after FMCSA's establishment in 2000, the tests examined a rollover stability advisor - a device that informs the driver about near-miss rollover situations - and a rollover stability controller - a mechanism that activates the engine brake if a rollover is imminent. A 2006 FMCSA study examining the costs/benefits estimated that a rollover stability control system could prevent up to 53 percent of rollover crashes resulting from excessive speed on curves.
