The New IMDG Code Criteria for Classifying Environmentally Hazardous Mixtures: Part Ⅱ

The classification of mixtures may vary depending on the data available on mixture components and depending on the manner in which the mixture hazards are assessed. The current method in the IMDG Code is very conservative and new alternatives continue to provide a conservative approach. Considering a single substance with an acute toxicity of slightly below 1 mg/l, a mixture of the substance and water would be regulated under the current IMDG Code if the concentration was 10% or more. The substance would have to be present in a concentration of 25% or more to be regulated as an EHS under the new summation approach. Under the formula method, which most correctly reflects the true hazard in this case, the substance would need to be present in a concentration approaching 100% before it was regulated.
