摘要

Recently, I was watching one of the first episodes of the TV series Breaking Bad. The antihero, high school chemistry teacher turned drug synthesizer, is in a tense conversation with a high level drug dealer about obtaining what could be classified as "short-term financing." The drug dealer replies, "yes, but it will cost you (can not remember the exact term used, but some street-smart reference to interest)." Our hero looks confused until his younger, street-smart partner interprets. The scene was great for comic relief in an intense drama, but yet another example of poor communication. I will acknowledge this is an odd way to start an editorial in the Journal of Food Science, but now more than ever, the scientific community needs to be the ones leading the discussion on issues of public concern related to food and nutrition. In short, we need to give a clear, concise, and passionate presentation of what are often very complex scientific issues.
