In-vitro antioxidant activities of aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Sargassum species—Indian brown seaweed

Seaweed antioxidants counteract environmental stresses and play an important rolein the prevention of free radical-induced diseases. The current study envisages thein vitro assessment of antioxidant activity by DPPH radical-scavenging activity, totalantioxidant activity, total phenolic content and ferric reducing antioxidant activityof aqueous and alcoholic extracts of three species of Sargassum namely, Sargassumpolycystum C. Agardh, Sargassum tenerrimum J. Agardh, and Sargassum cinctum J.Agardh. Of the three species, S. tenerrimum recorded significantly higher (p < .05)total antioxidant activity, total phenol content, and FRAP activity in aqueous extraction(51.95 ± 0.19; 36.49 ± 0.01; 13.35 ± 1.22) than the methanolic (40.87 ± 2.58;34.70 ± 0.16; 4.02 ± 0.37) extraction. The IC_(50) (mg/ml) of DPPH radical-scavengingactivity was observed at lower concentration of 800 μg/ml in S. tenerrimum with nosignificant difference between the method of extraction in the same species. The resultsof the study revealed that the aqueous extract of S. tenerrimum has a candidatepotential for antioxidant activity which suggests its utilization for functional benefitsto human beings.
