REVIEW OF ALTERNATIVE MEANS USED IN GREECE FOR CONTROLLING Lasioderma serricorne (F.) AND OF THE INSECT ENEMIES

Lasioderma serricorne (F.) (Coleoptera: Anobiidae), common cigarette beetle, is a well-known insect that infests a large number of stored products and is the most ubiquitous of all stored-product insects. It occurs throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world and is the most serious pest of stored tobacco. The loss of stored tobacco due to Lasioderma serricorne is estimated at 1.2%. The study of the above insect in Greece was first realised by C. T. Buchelos and during all the last years, it continues by the author (S. Papadopoulou), focusing on its biology and ethology, as well as on its control and registration of its natural enemies. The present work attempts to present the innovative means which were used in order to monitor and control L. serricorne and also, its natural enemies in Greek tobacco stores. It is worthwhile to state that our laboratory work has been very much facilitated by the separation of L. serricorne male and female without dissection of the abdomen but based on external observation of the urosterites only.
