The present work points to perform a parallel of the state-of-the-art coastal wave models SWAN and STWAVE, in order to assess the opportunity of their application in the Black Sea. Although both of them are numerical models based on the spectrum concept there are, however, significant differences between them in modelling the source terms also in the numerical techniques implemented. At this level of the work the emphasis is put on the influence of the boundary conditions correlated with the wideness of the computational domain. The first target for model comparisons is an area located in the Portuguese nearshore where in situ measurements were performed using in parallel more instruments. Analyses and comparisons are carried out both in time range and spatial frames. Finally, some parallel model simulations are also made in a coastal sector located in the western side of the Black Sea.
