ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT OF CONSTRUCTION AND DEMOLITION WASTE IN ROMANIA

Romanian economic growth in recent years has led to a significant increase in construction activity, which led to the generation of large amount of construction waste. Construction activities generate large amounts of waste, mainly construction and demolition waste, resulting from the construction of new buildings or infrastructure, demolition of existing buildings, but also during the remodelling or retrofitting existing buildings. Construction waste is often combined with demolition waste, and described as construction and demolition debris. Construction waste is a growing problem for Romania, and disposing of construction waste has major environmental impacts and can cause serious problems. These problems include soil pollution, surface water and groundwater contamination, and landscape degradation. Construction waste consists of unwanted material, often improperly stored along the riverbanks, roadsides, sometimes even used as fill material in reclamation and earth filling works. This study focuses on construction and demolition waste management practice in Romania, but also on the environmental impact associated with the construction and demolition waste disposal.
