ENVIRONMENTAL ASBESTOS EXPOSURE - A POSSIBLE RISK FACTOR FOR MESOTHELIOMA IN SIBLINGS

The environments quality near the large shipyard, refineries and cement factory could be involved in the occurrence of asbestos related diseases to the inhabitants from the area. The correlation between the pollutants from the atmosphere and diseases seems almost impossible to sustain, especially when exposure happened in infancy, and illnesses occur after 40-50 years. Children who lived near the cement factories may be affected by asbestos and may explain the reason why they develop the disease many years later, in the absence of occupational exposure. We present two clinical cases, sisters, who were born and lived all their lives about 3 km away from such cement plant and developed the same form of primitive pleural tumor called malignant mesothelioma. The similar environment in which the two sisters lived, the genetic predisposition in the presence of exposure to industrial pollution could explain the familial mesothelioma.
