The „right to food" and „to be spared from hunger" are priciples of international law. Hunger is not only a phenomenon of distant countries, it can be found in Germany today. Private food distribution initiatives, such as the „Tafeln", distribute significant amounts of foodstuffs free of charge every day. These initiatives or their existence has been criticized based on the argument that it is a government duty to sufficiently feed all people living in its territory. By pointing to the role of private initiatives against hunger and poverty in the past the author demonstrates that the „right to food" and „to be spared from hunger" are not only legal principles but human and social duties that justify the existence of institutions such as the „Tafeln".%Das Recht des Menschen ist's auf dieser Erden, Da er doch nur kurz lebt, glücklich zu sein, Teilhaftig aller Lust der Welt zu werden, Zum Essen Brot zu kriegen und nicht einen Stein.
