An nidentified dolphin (Stenella sp.) stranded dead on Kawah Island, Charleston County, South Carolina on 1 January 1996. Severe decomposition and Logistical difficulties prevented the retrieval of the whole carass and only the Skull was collected. Initial examination of the skull indicated the specimen was Either a striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) or a cylmene dolphin (S. cylmene). Using skull measurements and genetic analysis of the skin, the stranded animal Was determined to be a striped dolphin. This is only the second recorded stranding And first published account of this species in South Carolina.
