Sharp, Enel Partner On Solar Venture

Sharp Corporation and Enel SpA, one of Italy's largest power company, have agreed to establish a joint venture to operate as an independent power producer (IPP), which will develop photovoltaic power plants. The plants are expected to have combined total capacity of 189MW by the end of 2012. The joint venture agreement is expected to materialize in spring of 2009, with investments totaling approximately ￥100 billion and will be infused between 2009 to 2012. The photovoltaic plants will be built mainly in southern Italy and will make use of thin-film solar cells, which offer superior power generating efficiency in hot-climate regions.
