Technology is virtually ubiquitous today and the accelerating pace of technological change is abundantly obvious to anyone who watches television or scans the ads in the Sunday newspaper. Libraries have always been at the forefront of technology, as hilariously illustrated by Knut Naerum's 2001 Norwegian television skit "Medieval Helpdesk."1 Yet today as never before, libraries are profoundly challenged by the flood of new technologies, static or shrinking budgets, and the needs and demands of patrons whose own technology savvy ranges from barely aware to very sophisticated.
