EO/IR, Part 6 - Laser Target Designation

Laser designators and rangefinders have long been used against fixed and mobile ground targets and now are also significant threats to helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. When a laser illuminates a target, there is significant energy in the scintillation of laser energy from the surface of the target. A missile with a laser receiver can home on this scintillation, allowing extremely accurate target engagement.
