Teaching for Justice: Implementing Social Justice in the LIS Classroom

As a director of an MLIS program that offers a Diversity and Inclusion specialization, I know firsthand the rewards and challenges of teaching courses that center on social justice (as well as revamping courses to incorporate social justice values). Social justice issues have become more prevalent in LIS discourse in recent years, as evidenced by the publication of books such as Progressive Community Action: Critical Theory and Social Justice in Library and Information Science (2016) and the launching of the Journal of Critical Library and Information Studies. Because LIS education is not generally front and center in this dialogue, however, it can be difficult to find answers to questions about integrating social justice into our curriculum.
