Lyndon Johnson launched the "War on Poverty" in the United States in 1964. Over forty years later, poverty remains a pressing social issue. In 2005, one in eight Americans lived in poverty and, although there have been large increases in average income in recent decades, the proportion in poverty has remained relatively constant.
