This book advocates the right of Americans to retire-a right, it claims, that is under threat. Chapter 2 argues that pensions are becoming less adequate for workers at or below average wages, more unequal, and face workers with increasing uncertainty. Chapter 3 discusses the move away from defined-benefit (DB) pensions and chapter 4 examines the problems of defined-contribution (DC) individual accounts. Chapter 5 discusses a series of past reform proposals for social security. In the second part of the book, chapters 6 and 7 introduce some better news, discussing old-age leisure and its distribution in terms of wealth, race, gender, etc. Chapter 8 discusses the "new retirement," arguing that "older people are postponing retirement and working primarily because their sense of pension security has diminished, along with losses in their 401(k)-type pensions plans" (p. 233).
