The global financial crisis has aroused a new interest in former financial crises around the globe. The Russian financial crash of 1998 was spectacular. At the time, it looked like a miserable failure and the end of capitalism in Russia but, as former Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund Michel Camdessus notes in his foreword to this volume: "The resurrection of Russia's economy from a bankrupt pariah to an integral part of the world system has been perhaps the most extraordinary recovery story in global finance of the past decade" (p. x).
