The Time Use of Mothers in the United States at the Beginning of the 21st Century

This monograph provides a careful overview of daily time patterns of maternal caregiving with new national data, the 2003-06 time diaries in the American Time Use Survey. The authors place the current data in historical and policy context, and address three sets of questions. First, they analyze whether time in maternal caregiving is responsive to variations in work and income in a manner similar to or different from allocations in leisure and home production. Second, they compare single and married mothers and analyze husbands' influence on women's time use. Third, they look at the impact of nonstandard work hours on time in maternal caregiving.
