摘要

A few years ago, a job came through to tomato's studio from a mobile phone ring-tone distributor in Japan. Would we, they politely asked, be interested in making fifty video ringtones per month that they would then distribute via the Web to the ringtone market there in Japan? We said we would be interested and embarked upon conceiving, programming and designing 'content' for the ringtone market. I should point out that this was extremely early in the game, well before the Crazy Frog made his mark, before iTunes had reached market saturation and polyphonies turned telephones into miniature orchestras. There was a good reason for our early foray into the mobile phone content and ringtone market: mainly, very few had framed it or its potential. The world beyond the screen, contained within the object, was terra nova.
