Between the Town and the Gown On Hannes Meyer's Dismissal from the Bauhaus

Hannes Meyer's dismissal from the Bauhaus was not such a purely political affair as consensus has it. In the light of some new and reappraised documents, it seems to have followed from a generational conflict within the Bauhaus. The political reasons, that is Meyer's Marxist outlook, appear to have been a cover-up for generational differences shaped, among other factors, by the German politics of the late 1920s. 'Young' became a code word for that new generation of Bauhaus students who identified themselves and Meyer in opposition to older students and faculty, and their outlook.
