As a reflection of the emerging and maturing design histories in East Asia, this special issue will focus on critical design history studies in East Asia (Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong) to address the currently contested debate on 'global design history'. The editors have identified 'East Asia' as a culturally cohesive region and have also noted the importance of the formative period (1920s-90s) in defining modern design development.
