Been created when their subjects were new, or shortly thereafter.1 Rather than relying on the study of surviving rooms in historic buildings that had changed over time or been restored, they sought 'authentic' images to provide historically accurate settings for studies of materials, processes, and styles in the decorative arts, to which the study of the interior itself was then the handmaiden.
