Koloman Moser: Universal Artist between Gustav Klimt and Josef Hoffman

Celebrating the centenary of Koloman Moser's death in 1919 and published on the occasion of a concurrent exhibition at the Museum fur Angewandte Kunst in Vienna, this extensive and sensitively designed bilingual exhibition catalogue covers the gamut of Moser's career with eleven chapters authored by leading experts. The book is organized to cover works in art, design, interiors, graphic design and illustration, and scenography with contributions by Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, Christian Witt-Dorring, Otto Kapfinger, Stefan Oner, Kathrin Pokorny-Nagel, Rainald Franz, Patrick Werkner, Elisabeth Schmuttermeier, Sebastian Hackenschmidt, and a co-authored chapter by Daniela Franke and Kurt Ifkovits. The essays are presented loosely chronologically with thematic titles, rather than according to medium, laudably avoiding a common approach taken by decorative arts and design monographs. The exhibition itself is on view at Villa Stuck in Munich through September 2019, and a complementary exhibition of Moser's scenography work is concurrently staged at the Theatermuseum in Vienna. An enlightening chapter about set designs by Theatermuseum specialists is included as well.
