Crystal growth and magnetic properties of α-CuV_2O_6

For crystal growth of the thermally unstable compound CuV_2O_6 a V_2O_5-K_2SO_4 melt was used as a solvent. The phase relationships in the V_2O_5-K_2SO_4 and CuV_2O_6-V_2O_5-V_2O_5-K_2SO_4 systems were investigated and the phase diagram determined. Based on these diagrams CuV_2O_6 single crystals with dimensions up to 3x2x0.5 mm~3 were grown by slow cooling of the solution. The main problem is a creep of the melt over the crucible walls.
